Week 1: Project Management

The assignment for week 1 was to design a website.

Step 1

The first thing I did for this assignment was download the applications listed in the instructions. I downloaded and installed Brackets and then made an account on the GitHub website! I then followed Madison's instructions in her tutorial video and created a repository in GitHub and then also used commands in terminal on my Mac to copy this repository to my desktop. (work in terminal pictured below)

Step 2

I then went on the w3schools website to look at templates for my site. After looking at the previews for a bunch of options, I decided to go with the Nature Portfolio template. (pictured below)

Step 3

I then copied the source code from the w3schools template to the Brackets app, where I had installed an extension that would allow me to push my edits to my repository and website directly. I then worked on editing the information within the template to fit my needs and the overall look I wanted my website to have. I changed the layout to make the about me section a separate page from the home page, and then added a separate page for this assignment which you're reading right now! This photo below showcases me working on coding the site, with the Brackets app tiled to the left of my screen, and the live preview of my work on the right.

Most of these edits were made using my prior knowledge of coding, however I used a couple other resources from w3schools in my navigation bar, namely the popup for my assignments. After saving my edits to the code, I clicked the box next to the Commit button on the bracketsgit extension, which selected all of my pages that were edited. I then hit commit, and a popup which shows the changes made to the code appears.

After writing something to explain what was changed, the button that says OK is pressed. Brackets goes back to the editing screen, and a new button in the extension panel now has a number next to it that denotes the number of pages edited/changed.

I click on this and these changes get pushed to the Github repository which then updates the actual website!
